2026-27 Fall/Winter Womenswear Trend Report: Rustic Abundance and Jacquard Knitwear

Key takeaways

  • Knit outerwear sells best. Of Taobao's recent Top 10 best sellers in the "Rustic Abundance" style, 9 are cardigans, knit jackets or ponchos and only 1 is a skirt; the No. 1, from Desigual, sold 2,000+. On Douyin, the joint leaders from Holdoumen and 两三事 (Liangsanshi) are both jacquard knit jackets, at 6,000+ each.
  • Jacquard is the shared language. Taobao calls it "totem jacquard", Douyin "geometric jacquard" and Dewu "raised jacquard". Folk totems, geometric and animal motifs and vintage stripes come up most often.
  • Earth tones form the base. Khaki and off-white are key colours on Taobao, Douyin and Dewu alike, with vintage red/burgundy and navy as the deep shades. The report gives 6 Pantone colours, led by warm earth brown, burgundy and olive green.
  • Details: fringe, patchwork and embroidery. At least 6 of Taobao's Top 10 have fringed or frayed edges. The report's craft direction rests on five techniques: appliqué patchwork, fine hand embellishment, heavy embroidery, complex patchwork and cord work.
  • Maximalism, but with order. The report sums up the theme as "rich yet restrained, narrative structure, rational opulence, new luxury": patterns can be layered densely, but a unified palette and structure must hold them together.

By Valimart VALI Trend Research. Report published 16 October 2026. Sales data are recent best sellers on Taobao and Douyin at the time of publication (as displayed by each platform), plus Dewu's trending styles.

What "Rustic Abundance" means: the pastoral story, upgraded

"Rustic Abundance" (丰饶乡隅) is the theme Valimart VALI Trend Research has set out for Fall/Winter 2026-27 womenswear. It takes the traditional pastoral story up a level, blending urban polish with outdoor practicality and using heavy embroidery, jacquard brocade and multi-layered patchwork to create a richness you can touch. The theme answers rising consumption and emotional needs, is aimed at mature women, and has to work both for social occasions and for light outdoor wear.

Behind it is a shift in taste. The report sees maximalism moving from pure decoration to "narrative structure": florals, brocades, folk totems and vintage symbols are layered and recombined to tell a complete story. Taste is swinging back from minimal to expressive, and craft density, artistic narrative and collectability matter again.

The runway offers a template. Dries Van Noten's Fall/Winter 2026/27 collection turned maximalism into a fashion narrative: vintage florals, oil-painting fruit and checked brocades layered and recombined, diverse patterns clashing and interweaving, heavy jacquard and patchworked fabrics for richness, and tailoring mixed with outdoor silhouettes. The report names two key brands, each with its own angle:

  • Antonio Marras: vintage roses at the core, with heavy raised embroidery, sheer tulle and patchworked fabrics taking floral motifs apart and putting them back together. Silhouettes mix tailoring, capes and dresses, laying bold florals over soft base colours.
  • Sacai: jacquard knits, tweed, faux fur and leopard print mixed and recombined, with frayed fringe and big bows for a vintage mood, and mixed-material patchwork and long-over-short layering for depth, bringing vintage pastoral and urban utility together.

Beyond these, Laura Biagiotti's fringe and Gabriela Hearst's cape coats reinforce the outdoor feel, while Marine Serre and Blumarine bring artistic tension through heavy jacquard and raised embroidery.

Best sellers on three Chinese platforms: knit outerwear dominates

The table lists recent Top 10 best sellers in the Rustic Abundance style on Taobao (China's largest online marketplace) and Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok, where live-stream shopping is huge), plus the Top 10 trending styles on Dewu (also known as Poizon). Sales are the figures shown by each platform; "+" means "or more". Dewu does not show sales.

Four things stand out:

  • Taobao: knit outerwear almost sweeps the board. 9 of the 10 are cardigans, knit jackets and ponchos; the one exception is a leather skirt from Luna7xi with a printed side panel. The No. 1, from Desigual, is a multicolour striped hooded cardigan with frayed texture; No. 2, from MADEN (800+), is a folk-totem jacquard jacket with a wide lapel collar. At least 6 have fringed or frayed hems, and lapel collars and colour-blocked patchwork recur.
  • Douyin: two leaders at 6,000+ each. Holdoumen's jacquard jacket with a fleece collar and Liangsanshi's cardigan, which knits an oil-painting portrait into the jacquard, share the top tier; ROMI STUDIO's jacquard sweater is No. 3 (1,000+). Brands are concentrated: Guancaoyi alone takes 3 places (a knit skirt, a coat and a dress), and Liangsanshi takes 2.
  • Dewu: denser jacquards, bolder contrasts. 7 of the 10 are jacquard sweaters or cardigans; the rest are a crochet granny-square cardigan from BKQU, a patchwork jacket from LANLIN and printed wide-leg trousers from FITNESS EMPIRE. Beyond off-white, burgundy and navy, purple-green and blue-yellow appear as contrast accents.
  • Across platforms: Guancaoyi and Liangsanshi appear on both the Taobao and Douyin lists, and ICEDUST holds 2 places on Taobao.

Colours and key details: an earth-tone base, with jacquard, fringe and patchwork throughout

The three platforms overlap closely: khaki and off-white everywhere, vintage red/burgundy and navy as the deep shades, and contrast colours used only as accents.

Design directions: craft, pattern, fabric and silhouette

1. Craft: five techniques for a richness you can touch

The craft direction focuses on dimension and layering: different fabrics and motifs are layered and recombined, raised floral embroidery, fringe and knotted cord and mixed-fabric collage build a tactile surface, and dense handwork carries the artistic story.

TechniqueHow it is doneReference brand in the report
Appliqué patchworkChecks, prints and other fabrics cut into pieces and stitched onto tailored jacketsAntonio Marras
Fine hand embellishmentThree-dimensional flowers covering a checked fabricChanel
Heavy embroideryDense floral embroidery built up with sequins and beadsRoberto Cavalli
Complex patchworkMany jacquard and brocade panels pieced into one long dressErdem
Cord workChunky yarn worked into diamond lattices, fringe and openworkMarco Rambaldi

2. Pattern: vintage florals and botanicals, enlarged, recombined, raised

Patterns centre on vintage florals and botanical imagery and tell a story the eye can read. The report's examples: dense ditsy florals with gold-embroidered cuffs (Dries Van Noten), golden floral-sprig embroidery on a deep blue gown (Erdem), and leafy gold-thread embroidery on bags and cuffs (Loro Piana). Seafarer's vintage floral coat and Dior's multicolour jacquard brocade jacket enlarge, recombine and raise the floral motif. Dense embroidery and jacquard give patterns both tactility and collectable value.

3. Fabric: clashing textures, soft meets hard

Fabrics are about textures in contrast: terry loops, fluffy long pile, openwork weaves and layered heathered colour, soft and hard materials combined for warmth and visual depth, with the raw character of natural materials carrying maximalism's layers. The report lists six types: woven leather, bonded wool, long-pile plush, yarn-dyed textured fabric, natural wool and worsted wool check.

4. Silhouette: volume and ease

Silhouettes are built on volume and ease, blending urban polish with outdoor practicality, with emphasis on full shoulders and sleeves, generous hems and long-over-short layering. References: Dries Van Noten's layered puffy down coats, Chloé's puff-sleeve cropped tops with leather trousers, Louis Vuitton's cropped fur jacket with denim, Bernadette's waisted knits with full skirts, and AGNONA's loose knits with straight skirts.

The report also includes two sets of AI-generated reference looks that turn these directions into actual styles: a jacket patchworked from red-and-black check and florals, trimmed in fleece, with matching patchwork trousers; and a sleeveless long dress patchworked from landscape and paisley prints, layered over a pale blue shirt with a self belt.

What to do next: notes for designers and buyers

  1. Lead with knit outerwear: jacquard cardigans and knit jackets are the core on all three platforms, so build this category out first: totem or geometric jacquard, with lapel collars, fleece collars or fringed hems.
  2. Safe colours first, then accents: use khaki, off-white and earth brown across large areas, vintage red/burgundy and navy as deep shades, and keep contrast stripes, purple-green and blue-yellow to small details.
  3. Layer with a plan: when several patterns share one garment, tie them together with one family of earth tones and leave breathing room in light grey or off-white. That is what the report means by "keeping order within maximalist detail".
  4. Build coordinated sets: Douyin's list includes knit skirts, patchwork skirts and dresses, so pair a jacquard jacket with a knit or patchwork skirt to lift multi-item sales.
  5. Extend to shoes and bags: use brocade or jacquard fabrics for uppers and bag bodies, add fringe or fleece trim as accents, and carry over rust brown, burgundy and dark olive so footwear and apparel sell as a set.
  6. Design before sampling: embroidery, patchwork and crochet are costly to sample, so use AI to combine pattern, colour and craft into design images first, pick a direction, then sample.
